Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) today said that private sector and estate sector employees should be granted leave to cast their votes at the local government elections on Thursday (17).
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake has told the media today that the few hours granted by the private sector for its employees to cast their votes on the 17th was insufficient.
Attanayake has noted that the private sector employees should be granted leave for one day to cast their votes, especially if they are registered in an area that is away from their place of work.
The UNP General Secretary has also observed that estate sector workers should also be given leave to vote.
He has called on the Elections Commissioner to look into the matter.
