After days of protests two prisoners have escaped from the troubled Anuradhapura Prison in north central Sri Lanka Saturday, Prisons Commissioner General, Major General V.R. De Silva has said.
Major General de Silva has said the prisoners had escaped from the prison's open camp today.
The two prisoners had been imprisoned for minor offenses and the Anuradhapura police have deployed a special team to apprehend them.
The escape followed several protests held by prisoners within the prison premises from last Monday till Thursday.
The massive protest held on Monday (24) resulted in the death of a prisoner while 21 others were injured.
A few days later, another group of prisoners protested against what they called the inadequate facilities in the prisons.
